Since I started this site I've learned a little about what the PA's do on a day-to-day basis. Now I have nothing but respect.
Sometimes I wish I was a PA (Public Affairs Specialist)... then I look at what they go through each day. It's a tough job and only a certain type of person can handle the responsibilities they are tasked with. To be successful at fulfilling these responsibilities the PA must have excellent communication, speaking, writing, photography, computer and creative skills.
Contrary to what other think, sitting around making clips, taking photos of other people doing work, and interviewing CG heroes after the big event play a small role in the duties and responsibilities of a PA. On a daily basis PA's must deal with a wide range of customers from the local Fireman and Seamen Apprentices to high-ranking officials, both civilian and military. They constantly receive requests for information, support, guidance, and tasking from every division in and out of the Coast Guard. The PA's are always ready to supply the needed support. Whether it's an Officer, Enlisted or retired Coast Guardsman, the news media (local and nation wide), government agencies (military or nonmilitary) or one of the thousands of organizations associated (or not associated) with the Coast Guard.
The PA's are responsible for getting information out to the field, local communities, the American people and the world.
They also play a big part in boosting the moral of the Coast Guard.
Some people say CGClips does a better job at this than they do... This is false
I couldn't do what they do. I sure as hell couldn't produce what they produce under the restrictions they are put under, not to mention the small budget they have and the approval process they go through before they release anything is probably insane.
All of the clips on CGClips.com include footage that was taken or edited by a PA. I guarantee that an average of 60% of the pictures and footage on each clip have been handled by a PA before it was released to the Internet for us to use.
In fact the first person to view The First Four Years was CWO Dave French. While he was stationed at the Coast Guard Academy as a PA Chief, I showed him a movie I made for my Dad (The First Four Years). His positive reaction led me to create CGCook.com. I can't thank him enough.
What does any of this have to do with the clip? Nothing... but I've been receiving feedback about the lyrics being used on this site. I've always felt the music and its lyrics are what make these clips work.
Leave it to a PA to prove me wrong!!!
I'm proud to release CGClips.com's first lyric (and royalty) free rock music clip!!!
It's not easy transforming unfamiliar, lyric free rock music into an action packed, in your face CGClip.
Excellent work Paul and thank you,
Jimmy Z

"I've been in the Coast Guard for seven years and am currently the supervisor at Public Affairs Detachment Western Alaska. A lot of people I meet in the Coast Guard ask me, "Why would you join the Coast Guard and be a PA?" It's simple, what other rate gives you the freedom to do everything the Coast Guard has to offer. One day I may be flying in an HH-60 on a homeland security patrol and when I land I may have to deal with a breaking SAR case. The next day I may have to brief the district commander before he does an interview followed by a ride on the 41' down at my local station to get photos of boarding operations. PA's travel all over the country to assist in major spill responses or incidents. The local PA's may not show up for your units change of command but that doesn't mean they're slacking off. They may be dealing with reporters, book writers, other photographers, local dignitaries, congressional dignitaries, documentary, film or television production companies or they may be underway with a unit getting another story. That is just a small sample of what we do. We are here to tell the Coast Guard's story and compared to the other military services we're good at it. I know that I've run into my share of people at units who don't want to deal with the PA's when we're calling about a recent SAR case, remember we're here to make you look good.
This is a video that I put together for a visiting group of Chinese dignitaries. The music is from www.freeplaymusic.com a free production music source."
